Now that we have stepped into 2022, here is a quick peek into some movie releases of 2022 that have me all excited for the year.

1.Gangubai Kathiawadi (Hindi)

Ditching the royal backdrop this time, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is back with the story of a female gangster Gangubai Kathiawadi who ruled the slums of Kamathipura. The trailer was released sometime back in 2021 and received huge love online. Everyone, including me, is excited to see Alia in a uniquely distinguishing role. I can see her career taking a totally different trajectory with the success of this film. As of now, Gangubai Kathiawadi is slated to be released on 25 February 2022.

2.RRR (Telugu)

After the sensational success of Baahubali, director S Rajamouli is all set with his much-anticipated release RRR. The film has Telugu stars Jnr NTR and Ramcharan in the lead roles and marks the Telugu debut of Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn. Originally planned to release on Jan 7, 2022, RRR has been postponed indefinitely due to the rising coronavirus cases in India and abroad.

3.Shamshera (Hindi)

It has been almost three years since Ranbir had a movie release. He definitely was working on some exciting projects at this time and Shamshera is one such film. Ranbir plays Balli and his father Shamshera in this period drama film. The film is scheduled to be released on March 18, 2022.

4.Brahmastra (Hindi)

The first film from the trilogy, Brahmastra has love birds Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor in the lead roles. The film is a fantasy period drama that tells the story of a young man Shiva (Ranbir Kapoor) who attains superpowers and travels back to time (pre-Mahabharatha era) to know more about the ‘Brahmastra’ for a mission in the future. Brahmastra is scheduled to be officially released on 9 September 2022.

5.Hridayam (Malayalam)

I was excited about the film right from when it was announced. The film, directed by Vineeth Sreenivasan, has an exciting cast that includes Kalyani Priyadarshan, Pranav Mohanlal, and Darshana Rajendran. From a generation that has grown to love and admire the Priyadarshan-Mohanlal combo, it is fair to be excited about their kids Kalyani and Pranav sharing screen space. I haven’t been a fan of Pranav Mohanlal’s previous works but if this film works out, he sure can get a career revival.

6.Bheeshma Parvam (Malayalam)

Amal Neerad and Mammootty are back again after more than a decade with the Malayalam movie Bheeshma Parvam. In this period drama gangster film, Mammootty plays a former gangster who works as a marine exporter. Mammootty sure is aging like fine wine. Packed with an amazing cast, Bheeshma Parvam is definitely going to rush people to the theatres.

7. Puzhu (Malayalam)

When Parvathy Thiruvoth said in an interview that “You all will be shocked to see what Mammootty is playing in Puzhu”, I already had my hopes high. The latest teaser gave a glimpse of what Parvathy might be hinting towards. The one-minute teaser that starred Mammootty came out very mysterious and spooky. It only left me wanting to know more about the movie. Let us wait and watch if the movie is really worth all the anticipation.

8.Thuramukham (Malayalam)

Acclaimed cinematographer/director Rajeev Ravi’s directorial Thuramukham is one of the most exciting Malayalam movies of 2022. The film is actually based on a play with the same name written by K. M. Chidambaran. Rajeev Ravi has a knack for making films that reflect the socio-economic and cultural issues of various communities in society. The film has a stellar cast that includes Nivin Pauly, Nimisha Sajayan, Darshana Rajendran, Indrajith Sukumaran, Joju George, and others.

9.BroDaddy (Malayalam)

After Lucifer, Prithviraj is back in the director’s chair. But this time he too shares significant screen space in his film. Apparently, Prithviraj seems to be playing Mohanlal’s son and I am already sold. The film also has Kalyani Priyadarshan in film. The film will witness an OTT release on Disney+ Hotstar on 26 January 2022.

10.Ponniyin Selvan (Tamil)

The 1955 novel by Kalki Krishnamurthy has finally found its perfect adaptation that is helmed by the legend Mani Ratnam himself. No major glimpses of the film have been given away so far and the mystery surrounding this epic historical fiction film is getting intense. The film has a promising cast of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Vikram, Trisha, and others.
