Upcoming Movies From 2024 I’m Looking Forward To

Another exciting year is finally here and some exciting movies are waiting to entertain us. Here’s a list of upcoming movies from 2024 that I’m really excited about.

2023 was a remarkable year for world cinema. A female director crossed the box office benchmark, SRK resurrected himself, showing everyone who the real king is, Karan Johar has his sweet revenge with Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, Mammootty redefined what it means to be a superstar, and above all, theatres are flocking again with people after the covid-induced dry spell.

While we do not know how 2024 is going to turn out, the year holds the promise of extraordinary tales yet to be told, characters waiting to come to life, and emotions that will resonate long after the credits roll. Just like you, I’m so excited about some movies releasing this year. Here are 7 upcoming movies from 2024 that I’m looking forward to. Just so you know, they are ranked in no particular order.

1. Malaikotte Valiban (Malayalam)

Release Date: 25th January

It’s no secret that Mohanlal, who once you used to rule the box office has been struggling to give us a film that matches the standard he has set for himself in the past. He might have made some bad choices in the last couple of years, but hopefully, his dry spell will end soon with Malaikotte Valiban which is directed by none other than Lijo Jose Pellisery.

Malaikotte Valiban is supposedly a fantasy period drama and the film’s making has been kept very secretive, so we don’t have much information on what it will be like. My curiosity about the film is already high. When Mohanlal’s first look poster was released from the film, it created quite a stir on the internet, getting people excited for the film.

Lijo Jose Pellissery’s collaboration with Mammootty earlier last year gave us Mammootty in his element through Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam. Will LJP recreate the same magic with Mohanlal? We can only wait and watch.

2. Varshangalku Shesham (Malayalam)

Release Date: 14th April 2024

If there’s a director in Malayalam cinema with zero misses, that is Vineeth Sreenivasan. He has what I would like to say “The Midas Touch”, turning all his directorial ventures into gold. And he is back with another exciting film which has an ensemble star cast, which includes his brother Dhyan Sreenivasan, Mohanlal’s son Pranav Mohanlal, Nivin Pauly, Kalyani Priyadarshan and more.

The film, like most of Vineeth’s films, is expected to bring out the essence of Chennai. Not much is available about the film, but from the poster released recently, it does seem to be set in the early 80s. This is an upcoming movie from 2024 that many Malayalis like me are really looking forward to. Anyways, fingers crossed.

3. Aadu Jeevitham (Malayalam)

Release Date: 10th April, 2024

It’s been quite some time since we all have been expecting Aadu Jeevitham to be released but it just never happened. The film took forever to shoot because obviously, it’s a very challenging subject and if not done well, it can be a disaster. From the trailer that was released, Aadu Jeevitham seems like Prithviraj’s finest performance in a long time.

Lucky for everyone waiting for this gem for years, Prithviraj Sukumaran recently took to his Instagram to announce the release date of the film and it is expected to release on April 10. It looks like the Vishu season is going to be a theatrical celebration with Addujeevitham and Varshangalku Shesham both releasing around the same time.

4. Bramayugam (Malayalam)

Release Date: 15th February

Malayalam cinema is world-renowned for creating compelling movies that explore myriad ideas and narratives. But if there’s one genre that Malayalam cinema hasn’t arrived at yet, it is the horror genre. But a couple of years ago, a film released that sent a chill through my spine. The film was Bhoothakalam, a movie I believe is one of the finest horror dramas made in Malayalam till date. The director of the film is back with yet another horror film, this time starring none other than Mammootty.

To top up the excitement, Mammootty is playing the villain in this film which is titled Bramayugam. Any film with Mammootty in a versatile role is going to be a winner, and history is proof of the same. This film will easily top my list of exciting upcoming movies from 2024.

5. Aavesham (Malayalam)

Release Date: 11th April

Another Malayalam actor struggling with a dry spell in the theatres is Fahad Fasil but hopefully Aavesham will fix that. The first poster of the film was released recently and Fahad’s look from the film has caught everyone’s attention. Though not much is available about the film, it looks like a quirky, hilarious, fun movie just like director Jithu Madhavan’s first outing Romancham. Let me remind you that Romancham was a sleeper hit that revived the Kerala theatre scene, cashing in a lot of money. People flocked into the theatres to have a hearty laughter and entertaining experience. Aavesham is an upcoming movie from 2024 that many including me are eagerly waiting for.

6. Merry Christmas (Hindi)

Release date: 12th January

By the time this blog post reaches you, the film will have already been released. Sriram Raghavan never disappoints when it comes to thrillers. One of the most exciting factors about the film is its fresh pairing. Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi might not be a couple we were expecting to see onscreen but here we are and the promos and the songs assure us that this is a long overdue pairing.

7. IF

Release Date: 17th May

How could I not be excited about a film where Jim and Micheal from The Office reunite? John Krasinski who played Jim in The Office is directing IF (short for Imaginary Friends) and brings together a big cast under one roof which includes Steve Carell, Ryan Reynolds, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and many big names from Hollywood. The teaser is already out and it looks something very new and interesting.
