Upcoming South Indian Remakes in Bollywood
For the past few years, Bollywood has produced fewer original movies and more remakes and biopics. Is it some sort of creative block or a marketing strategy? we never really know. We are in a time when we are easily introduced to movies of all languages. In India regional movies are more accessible now than it was a couple of years back. Taking that into consideration, how much will these remakes in Bollywood appeal to the audience? Let’s wait and watch. Till then have a look at these upcoming South Indian remakes in Bollywood.
Vikram Vedha (Tamil)
The Tamil thriller movie that had Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathy rocking the show will now be remade in Bollywood with Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan. Vikram Vedha is an exciting cat-and-mouse thriller where Madhavan played a cop and Vijay Sethupathy played a notorious gangster. The Hindi remake is likely to be released by September 2022.
Soorarai Pottru (Tamil)
Soorarai Pottru starring Suriya was released via OTT earlier this year. I must say that we all missed a magical theatrical experience. The movie is inspired by the real-life of Captain G R Gopinath who made the impossible dream of affordable flights for the poor come true. The film also helped Suriya come out strong like before after a dry spell. Fortunately, the Hindi remake of Soorarari Pottru will be directed by Sudha Kongara, who directed the original movie. The cast of the Hindi remake is yet to be finalized.
Helen (Malayalam)
The Malayalam movie Helen is the story of a 25-year-old restaurant employee who gets stuck in the freezer of the restaurant. The Malayalam movie had Anna Ben playing the titular character and she nailed the film with her stunning performance. Jahnvi Kapoor will be playing Helen in the Hindi remake. The Hindi remake has been named Mili.
Anniyan (Tamil)
Anniyan is a Tamil movie that created quite a roar upon its release. Chiyaan Vikram was lauded for his irreplaceable performance as a person suffering from multiple personality disorder. The film directed by celebrated director Shankar was a huge success. Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has been roped in to play the lead character in the Bollywood remake of Anniyan. The most acceptable choice! Ranveer sure does have that energy needed for the character. This could be one of the anticipated upcoming South Indian remakes in Bollywood.
Maanaragam (Tamil)
Maanagaram is being remade in Bollywood in the name of Mumbaikar. Maanagaram directed by Lokesh Kanakaraj is an edge-of-the-seat thriller. The remake, Mumbaikar, is almost complete and has Vijay Sethupathy, Vikrant Massey, and Taniya Maniktala in the lead roles. The film also marks the Bollywood debut of Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathy.
Comali (Tamil)
The Tamil movie Comali starring Jayaram Ravi is a story about a man who wakes up from a coma after a long gap of fifteen years and finds it difficult to adapt to the new world. The film was a success in Tamil. The Hindi remake of Comali will be produced by Boney Kapoor and will have Arjun Kapoor essaying the role of Jayam Ravi’s character.
Ala Vaikunthapuramulo (Telugu)
The Telugu blockbuster movie Ala Vaikunthapuramulo will be remade in Hindi with the new sensation Kartik Aryan as the male lead. The original film had heartthrob Allu Arjun and Pooja Hegde playing the lead. The Hindi remake is named Shehzada as of now.
There are a couple of remakes that have been completed and are all set to release.
There is no question that these remakes are never going to outgrow the original but let’s hope that they at least do justice to the original ones.
