Never been a fan of science fiction but Kalki 2898 AD gives me hope
Science fiction and action; are two categories of movies I have always stayed away from. And even when I have tried, it has been draining for me to maintain my focus and attention and I have needed a whole day to recover. Surprisingly, there seems to be something different about the Kalki 2892 AD trailer that makes me excited about the movie.
The trailer of the movie was released on 10 June at a grand ceremony in Hyderabad. Kalki 2898 AD is all set to release on June 27th, 2024 and I guess it’s time for me to book my tickets. Ok, so here’s why I am all in for the movie:
A Nag Ashwin Directorial
I have only watched a handful of Telugu movies, most directed by Nag Ashwin. Mahanti (2018), Yevade Subramaniam (2015), and even the movie he produced Jathi Ratnalu (2020). I have been a fan of all these movies and have found them thoroughly entertaining. So, whenever I hear Nag Ashwin’s name associated with a movie, I have no second thoughts. I hope he does not prove me wrong.

The Stellar Starcast
Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, and Prabhas; all yes but Kamal Hassan in a cameo, now that I have got to see him in Kalki 2898 AD. The trailer did end by giving us a glimpse of his character, a prophet-like figure, but the mystery about his character remains. The movie also has Malayalam actresses Shobhana and Anna Ben in the movie and I’m looking forward to seeing what they play.
A Tech Heavy Science Fiction
I happened to read somewhere that director Nag Ashwin wanted real innovative vehicles for his movie instead of relying on CGI. And thus, he approached Anand Mahindra from Mahindra and Mahindra to help him out with designing these vehicles, to which Anand Mahindra happily obliged. This seems really ambitious and very innovative given the usual scale of making in Indian cinema.
Apparently, the making of the movie was stretched to allow the technicians and art directors to carefully design the weapons and other props crucial for the movie. A lot of effort seems to have gone behind the making of Kalki 2898 AD and I hope it is all worth it.
Big Production, But Rightfully So
Don’t get me wrong, big-budget movies never excited me. What excited me in this case was the feeling that Kalki 2898 AD could do what other high-budget movies failed to do. Made on a whopping budget of 600 crores, Kalki 2898 AD is currently one of the most expensive movies made. The trailer shows that every penny was well spent, unlike in the case of Adhipurush which claimed to be made on a budget of 500 crores, but once the trailer was released, no one could figure out where the money was actually spent. It was a disaster and so have many such high-budget movies released recently. Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, is the latest in this category. Kalki 2898 AD fortunately seems honest about its budget and it is assuring in terms of its grand and innovative narrative under this budget.
Another Pan-Indian Movie After Bahubali
No movie has been able to earn the “pan-Indian” tag like Bahubali did since its last part was released a couple of years ago. I am somewhere hopeful that Kalki 2898 AD will be the one that matches up to this label in every sense and revive the struggling industry.
Kalki 2898 AD is set in a futuristic world where a cruel ruler is in search of a warrior woman named Padma, played by Deepika Padukone. Padma is under the protection of Ashwatthama played by Amitabh Bachchan. Prabhas’s Bhairav is the soldier he sends in search of this woman and a battle begins which can alter the concept of time. Interesting right? Fingers crossed for Kalki 2898 AD!
