In minimal words, Fleabag is humorously heart-breaking.

Fleabag is a series revolving around the life of a 30 something-year-old immature and careless woman whose name is never mentioned throughout the series.

It’s a really strange name; Fleabag! Nowhere are we mentioned about her name nor do we know what Fleabag stands for. We have no choice but to assume that Fleabag is the name of the lead character.

We see Fleabag struggling with her Café business and dealing with family aggression. Something that keeps tormenting her throughout Season 1 and at the end of which the reason for her grief is disclosed. Her hypersexual instinct forces her into having meaningless sex, which is what got her into all the trouble and mess.

As she says to her counselor- ‘I spent most of my adult life using sex to deflect from the screaming void inside my empty heart.’ The scenes with Fleabag and her soon-to-be stepmother are hilarious. They both hide their hatred for each other with a devilish smile just for the sake of Fleabag’s father.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a spunky one-woman army. She has written and presented the character so well that we are able to feel all the emotions that Fleabag goes through. By breaking the fourth wall (Yes, Fleabag inspired me to come up with the name for my blog!) she ensures that Fleabag is self-aware and very involved with her audience. The Emmy Awards went into the right hands I would say!

In Season 2, which according to Phoebe Waller-Bridge was never intended to be made, we see Fleabag transform into a much-matured woman, who takes accountability for her careless actions. She tries to pull her life together in this season with some help from her sister Claire.

Fleabag and her sister Claire share a bond of love and hatred. Claire, who is apparently more successful than her sister, is stuck in a quite troublesome marriage. Well, the second season has it for everybody. On one side where you see Fleabag growing up, we see Claire running away from her eccentric husband to where her heart called her.

The hot priest who has all our hearts

The ‘Hot Priest’ is a treat. You instantly fall for his charm and not-preachy attitude. He redefines the visual representation of priests in TV. Andrew Scott brings perfection to the hot priest that we keep thinking about if he is actually a priest or not. Fleabag’s feelings for the hot priest are not just her hypersexual instincts, it is pure love. It is for the first time in her life that she actually meant her ‘I love you’.

Hot Priest Fleabag

In the relationship we see her grow from having meaningless sex to allowing herself to be loved. She understands the true meaning of love; that’s it not about getting what you want but letting go with grace and also understanding the other person. As Fleabag walks away from the camera, teary-eyed, we feel every bit of her. We don’t feel sad at the fact that she didn’t get what she wanted but happy at the thought of how she evolved as a strong and mature individual.

As for that ending: the Priest’s speech on the nature of love was electrifying. “Love is awful. It’s painful. Frightening. It makes you doubt yourself, judge yourself, distance yourself from the other people in your life. Makes you selfish, makes you creepy, makes you obsessed with your hair. It takes strength to know what’s right. And love isn’t something that weak people do. Being a romantic takes a hell of a lot of hope.” These words say so much
